When your Bluetooth driver on Windows breaks, everything stops working at once. Your headphones won’t connect, the Bluetooth switch disappears, or Device Manager shows a yellow warning sign. You click “Update driver,” Windows says the best driver is already installed, and you’re left wondering what to do next.

The fix is usually one of three things: update the driver, reinstall it cleanly, or roll it back to the version that worked before. This guide shows you which one to pick, how to do each step on Windows 11 and 10, and where to get the right driver without risky download sites.

Are You Looking for a Specific Driver Download?

If you already know your problem and just need the download link for your adapter, skip ahead. Our chipset guide lists where to get official drivers for Intel, Realtek, MediaTek, and Qualcomm Bluetooth adapters: Bluetooth driver downloads for Intel, Realtek, MediaTek and Qualcomm.

Not sure which adapter you have? Here’s how to check in 30 seconds:

    • Press Windows + X and click Device Manager. (Or press Windows + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.)
    • Click the small arrow next to Bluetooth to expand it.
    • Look for the adapter’s name. It usually includes the brand, like Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R), Realtek Bluetooth Adapter, or MediaTek Bluetooth Adapter.

If you see Generic Bluetooth Radio or Generic Bluetooth Adapter, Windows is using its own basic driver. That often works, but it can cause problems because it isn’t made for your exact hardware.

The 3 Main Bluetooth Driver Fixes (And When to Use Them)

Don’t just try things at random. Each fix solves a different kind of problem.

Choose the right Bluetooth driver fix - update, reinstall, or roll back

If you’re not sure, start with Update. If that doesn’t help, Reinstall. Use Roll back only when the problem started after a change.

How to Update Your Windows Bluetooth Driver

Open Device Manager (Windows + X, then Device Manager). Expand Bluetooth. Right-click your Bluetooth adapter and choose Update driver. Click Search automatically for drivers.

If Windows finds a newer driver, it installs it. Restart your PC when it’s done.

    The Problem with “Search Automatically”

Here’s something most guides don’t tell you. Most of the time, you’ll see this message: “The best drivers for your device are already installed.”

That message doesn’t mean your driver is the newest one. In current versions of Windows, “Search automatically” mainly checks drivers already stored on your PC. It doesn’t search the internet for your laptop maker’s latest version. So Windows can say “up to date” even when a newer, better driver exists.

    Here’s what to do instead:

Option 1: Check Windows Update’s optional driver updates. Windows 11: Settings, then Windows Update, then Advanced options, then Optional updates. Open Driver updates and look for anything with “Bluetooth” or your adapter brand in the name. Windows 10: Settings, then Update & Security, then Windows Update, then View optional updates, then Driver updates. Tick the Bluetooth driver, click Download & install, and restart.

Option 2: Get the driver from your PC or adapter maker. This is usually the most reliable option. See the next section for which website to use.

Option 3: Use “Browse my computer.” In the Update driver window, choose Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Windows shows every Bluetooth driver version already saved on your PC. You can pick a different one, including an older version that worked before.

Should You Download From Intel or From Dell, HP, or Lenovo?

This is a common question. Here’s the simple rule:

    • Laptops and brand-name PCs (Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer): start with the support page on your PC maker’s website. Enter your model or serial number and look under Bluetooth or Wireless drivers. These drivers are tested for your exact machine.
    • Desktops with an Intel adapter, or if your laptop maker’s driver is very old: download from Intel’s website, or use the free Intel Driver & Support Assistant, which finds the right driver for you.
    • USB Bluetooth dongles: use the dongle maker’s website, or the chipset maker (often Realtek) if the dongle brand doesn’t offer one.
Download official Bluetooth drivers from your PC maker's support page

Skip paid “driver updater” programs. Tools that scan your PC and update everything at once often install the wrong chipset driver, which can make Bluetooth worse. Everything you need is free from Microsoft, your PC maker, or the chip maker. See whether you need Intel or Realtek Bluetooth software at all.

How to Reinstall a Corrupted Bluetooth Driver (Clean Install)

A clean reinstall removes the broken driver completely and lets Windows set it up again from scratch. This is the best fix for a missing Bluetooth switch, Code 43 or Code 10 errors, or Bluetooth that won’t turn on at all.

The order matters. Follow these steps exactly.

Step 1: Download the OEM Driver First

Before you uninstall anything, download the correct driver from your PC maker or adapter maker (see the section above). Save the file to your Desktop so it’s easy to find.

Why first? After you uninstall, Windows may only install a basic generic driver, or none at all. Having the right driver ready means you can fix it right away. It also helps if your PC needs Bluetooth for your keyboard or mouse, because those will stop working during the reinstall. Keep a USB mouse or the laptop touchpad handy.

Step 2: Uninstall the Broken Driver in Device Manager

Open Device Manager and expand Bluetooth. Right-click your Bluetooth adapter and choose Uninstall device. Tick the checkbox that says Attempt to remove the driver for this device (Windows 11) or Delete the driver software for this device (Windows 10). This removes the broken files, not just the device entry. Click Uninstall.

Only uninstall the main adapter (the one with Intel, Realtek, or MediaTek in its name). You don’t need to remove every item in the Bluetooth list.

Step 3: Restart Windows to Force a Reinstall

Restart your PC. Use Restart, not Shut down, so Windows fully reloads. Windows detects the adapter and installs a driver automatically. Now run the driver file you downloaded in Step 1 and follow its steps. Restart one more time, then turn Bluetooth on and pair your devices again.

If Device Manager still shows a yellow warning with an error code after this, the code tells you what’s wrong. See what Bluetooth Device Manager error codes mean.

How to Roll Back a Bluetooth Driver

Use this when Bluetooth worked fine yesterday and broke after an update.

Open Device Manager and expand Bluetooth. Right-click your Bluetooth adapter and choose Properties. Click the Driver tab. Click Roll Back Driver. Pick a reason, click Yes, and restart your PC.

Why Is the Roll Back Driver Button Greyed Out?

The button only works if Windows saved your previous driver. It’s greyed out when there’s nothing to go back to, for example:

    • The driver has never been updated on this PC.
    • The old driver was removed during the update or a cleanup.
    • The adapter was reinstalled, so Windows started fresh.

What to do instead: use Update driver, then Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. If an older version is listed, choose it. If not, download an older version from your PC maker’s support page and install it.

Windows Update may try to install the same broken driver again later. If Bluetooth breaks again after an update, see how to fix Bluetooth after a Windows update breaks it.

Why Is Bluetooth Missing from Device Manager Entirely?

If there’s no Bluetooth section in Device Manager, you can’t update, reinstall, or roll back anything yet. First, check whether it’s just hidden:

    • In Device Manager, click View at the top.
    • Click Show hidden devices.
    • Look again for the Bluetooth section.

    Also check these two places:

    • Other devices: an item with a yellow warning, like “Unknown device,” may be your Bluetooth adapter without a driver. Installing the driver from Step 1 above usually fixes it.
    • Universal Serial Bus controllers: on many laptops, Bluetooth is connected inside the PC through USB. If something here shows an error, it can take Bluetooth down with it.

If Bluetooth still doesn’t appear anywhere, the adapter may be turned off in the BIOS, disconnected, or not present at all. That needs a different set of fixes. See how to fix Bluetooth missing from Windows.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reinstall my Bluetooth driver?

Download the right driver first. Then open Device Manager, right-click your Bluetooth adapter, choose Uninstall device, tick the box to remove the driver, and restart. Install the downloaded driver after the restart.

Where do I download Bluetooth drivers for Windows 10 or 11?

From your laptop or PC maker’s support page first. For Intel adapters, Intel’s website or the Intel Driver & Support Assistant also works. Avoid third-party driver download sites.

Why does Windows say my driver is up to date when Bluetooth still isn’t working?

“Search automatically” mostly checks drivers already on your PC, not the newest online version. Check Optional updates in Windows Update or your PC maker’s website instead.

Why is the Roll Back Driver button greyed out?

Windows has no older driver saved to go back to. Use “Browse my computer for drivers” to pick an older version, or download one from your PC maker.

Is the Generic Bluetooth driver good enough?

Sometimes. It handles basic connections, but the official driver from your PC or chip maker is usually more stable and supports more features.

Will reinstalling the driver delete my paired devices?

Usually yes. Plan to pair your headphones, mouse, and other devices again after a reinstall.
