Resetting Bluetooth settings wipes out the saved Bluetooth data on your phone or computer so it can start fresh. It’s the last-resort fix when forgetting a device and restarting haven’t worked.

How you do it depends on your device:

    • Android: Clear the Bluetooth app’s cache first. If that fails, reset Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings.
    • iPhone and iPad: Use Reset Network Settings. There is no Bluetooth-only reset.
    • Windows: Remove your devices, restart the Bluetooth service, then reinstall the Bluetooth adapter.
    • Mac: Restart the Bluetooth system with one Terminal command.

Before you start, read the next section. Some of these resets also delete your saved Wi-Fi passwords.

What Actually Happens When You Reset Bluetooth?

A Bluetooth reset does not delete your photos, messages, apps, or contacts. It only touches connection settings. But on phones, a full reset usually clears Wi-Fi at the same time, and that surprises a lot of people.

Reset type What you lose What you keep
Forget one device That one pairing Everything else
Clear Bluetooth cache (Android) Temporary Bluetooth data Paired devices, Wi-Fi passwords, all personal files
Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi (Android) All paired devices, saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords Photos, apps, messages, contacts
Reset Network Settings (iPhone) Saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular and VPN settings. Expect to re-pair Bluetooth accessories too Photos, apps, messages, contacts
Windows reset (Steps 1 to 3 below) The devices you removed in Step 1 Wi-Fi, files, apps

Before you reset: write down any Wi-Fi passwords you don’t remember, like your home or office network. You’ll need to type them in again.

If you only have trouble with one accessory, forgetting that one device is often enough. You don’t need a full reset for that.

How to Reset Bluetooth Settings on Android

Android gives you two options. Start with the gentle one.

Method 1: Clear the Bluetooth App Cache (Keeps Wi-Fi Data)

Your phone stores temporary Bluetooth data in a hidden system app. If that data gets corrupted, it can break connections. Clearing it doesn’t remove your paired devices or Wi-Fi passwords.

    1. Open Settings, then Apps, then See all apps.
    2. Tap the three-dot menu and choose Show system.
    3. Find and tap Bluetooth.
    4. Tap Storage & cache, then Clear cache.
    5. Restart your phone and try connecting again.

Only tap Clear cache. Don’t tap Clear storage or Clear data, because that also removes your paired devices. On some newer Android versions, this option may be hidden or greyed out for the Bluetooth app. If you can’t find it, go to Method 2.

Method 2: Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth Settings (Full Reset)

This is the full Bluetooth reset on Android. It deletes all paired devices and saved Wi-Fi networks.

On Google Pixel and stock Android:

    1. Open Settings, then System, then Reset options.
    2. Tap Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi, then Reset.

On older Android versions, this option is called Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth, and it also resets your mobile data settings. Newer versions split them apart, so you can reset Bluetooth without touching your mobile network.

    On Samsung Galaxy:

    1. Open Settings, then General management, then Reset.
    2. On newer phones, tap Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings to reset only those. On older phones, tap Reset network settings, which also resets mobile data settings.
    3. Confirm the reset.
    4. Menu names can differ a little by brand and Android version. If you don’t see these exact words, search “reset” in your Settings app. Just make sure you never tap Factory data reset, which erases your whole phone.

How to Reset Bluetooth Settings on iPhone and iPad

iPhone and iPad don’t have a “Reset Bluetooth” button. Apple bundles Bluetooth in with your other network settings, so the only full reset is Reset Network Settings.

    1. Open Settings, then General.
    2. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone (or iPad), then Reset.
    3. Tap Reset Network Settings and enter your passcode.

Your iPhone will restart. After that, you’ll need to:

    • Join your Wi-Fi networks again and re-enter the passwords.
    • Pair your Bluetooth accessories again.
    • Set up any VPN you use again.

Be careful on that Reset screen. Erase All Content and Settings is right below it, and that one wipes your whole iPhone.

If you haven’t tried the simpler step yet, go to Settings, then Bluetooth, tap the “i” next to the device, and choose Forget This Device. That often fixes things without a full reset.

How to Reset Bluetooth on Windows 10 and Windows 11

Windows has no single reset button for Bluetooth either. Instead, you reset it in three steps. Try them in order and stop when it works.

Step 1: Remove your paired devices. On Windows 11, go to Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Devices. Click the three dots next to each device and choose Remove device. On Windows 10, go to Settings, then Devices, then Bluetooth & other devices, click the device, and choose Remove device.

Step 2: Restart the Bluetooth Support Service. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find Bluetooth Support Service (bthserv), right-click it, and choose Restart.

Reinstalling the Bluetooth Adapter in Device Manager

Step 3 is the deepest reset on Windows. It clears the adapter and makes Windows set it up again from scratch.

    1. Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
    2. Expand Bluetooth.
    3. Right-click your Bluetooth adapter (often named Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm, or MediaTek Wireless Bluetooth) and choose Uninstall device.
    4. Restart your PC. Windows reinstalls the adapter automatically.
    5. Pair your devices again.

Don’t use Windows’ Network reset button for this. It resets your internet and Wi-Fi adapters, not your Bluetooth setup.

If the Bluetooth section is missing from Device Manager or the Bluetooth toggle has disappeared, that’s a different problem.

How to Reset the Bluetooth Module on Mac

Older guides tell you to hold Shift + Option and click the Bluetooth icon, then choose “Reset the Bluetooth module.” That option was removed in macOS Monterey. On Monterey and newer, you use Terminal instead:

    1. Open Terminal (press Command + Space and type “Terminal”).
    2. Type sudo pkill bluetoothd and press Return.
    3. Enter your Mac password when asked. Nothing shows on screen while you type, which is normal.
    4. Restart your Mac.

This command stops the Bluetooth process, and macOS starts it again fresh. It doesn’t delete your files or Wi-Fi settings.

If you’re on macOS Big Sur or older, the Shift + Option menu still works there.

You may also see advice to reset the SMC or NVRAM. An SMC reset only applies to older Intel Macs. Macs with Apple silicon (M1 and newer) don’t have that option, so skip it if you have a newer Mac.

Still Not Working? Reset the Accessory Too

Resetting your phone or computer only clears one side of the connection. Your headphones or speaker keep their own saved pairings too. If they still hold an old, broken pairing, they may keep rejecting your device even after a full reset. Most accessories have their own reset, often done by holding the power or pairing button for about 10 seconds.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Will resetting network settings delete my photos?

No. It only removes connection settings like Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and VPN settings. Your photos, messages, apps, and contacts stay safe.

What’s the difference between forgetting a device and resetting Bluetooth?

Forgetting removes one device. Resetting clears all Bluetooth data on your phone or computer. Try forgetting the device first, and reset only if that doesn’t help.

Why can’t I find a “Reset Bluetooth” button on my iPhone?

Apple doesn’t offer one. Bluetooth is included in Reset Network Settings, under Settings, then General, then Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Reset.

How do I clear my Bluetooth cache?

On Android, go to Settings, then Apps, show system apps, open Bluetooth, and tap Clear cache. iPhone and Mac have no Bluetooth cache you can clear, so use the resets above instead.

Do I need to factory reset my phone to reset Bluetooth?

No. A factory reset erases your whole phone. Start with a soft reset (turn Bluetooth off and on, or restart your phone). Then clear the Bluetooth cache, and use the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi reset only as your last step.
