A Bluetooth device is “discoverable” when it’s sending out a signal that says “I’m here, you can pair with me.” If it isn’t discoverable, nothing else can find it, no matter how many times you scan.

Usually the fix is simple: the device is on but not in pairing mode, or its short discoverable window already closed. On Windows, this often shows up as the error “That didn’t work. Make sure your Bluetooth device is still discoverable, then try again.” Below you’ll find fixes for both, plus how to make your own phone, PC, iPhone, or Mac discoverable.

    • Headphones, speakers, keyboards: Hold the pairing button (often the power button) until the light flashes, then scan right away.
    • Android, iPhone, or Mac: Open the Bluetooth settings screen and keep it open while the other device searches.
    • Windows PC: Turn on ‘Allow Bluetooth devices to find this PC’ in More Bluetooth settings.

Are You Fixing the Accessory or the Host Device?

Every Bluetooth connection has two sides:

    • The accessory is the thing that needs to be found, like headphones, a speaker, or a keyboard. It broadcasts.
    • The host is the thing doing the searching, like your phone or PC. It scans.

Which side you fix depends on what you’re trying to do:

Your situation Which side needs to be discoverable Where to go
Your headphones or speaker won’t show up on your phone or PC The accessory Accessory section below
Windows shows the “still discoverable” error Usually the accessory Windows error section below
Your car, laptop, or another phone can’t find your phone Your phone Android or iPhone section below
Another device can’t find your PC or Mac Your computer Windows or Mac section below

If your phone or PC can’t find any device at all, even ones that are clearly in pairing mode, the problem is on the scanning side instead.

How to Make Bluetooth Accessories Discoverable (Headphones, Speakers)

Here’s the part that trips most people up: turning a device on does not make it discoverable. When most headphones and speakers turn on, they try to reconnect to a device they already know. They only broadcast to new devices when they’re in pairing mode.

To put an accessory into pairing mode:

    1. Turn it on.
    2. Press and hold the pairing button, or the power button on many models, until the light starts flashing.
    3. Scan for it on your phone or PC right away.

Watch the LED light. It tells you what state the device is in:

LED pattern What it usually means
Flashing blue, or blue and red Pairing mode. The device is discoverable.
Slow single blink or solid light Turned on and connected, or trying to reconnect. Not discoverable.
No light Off, or the battery is dead.

Patterns vary by brand, so check the manual if yours looks different.

Two more things can stop an accessory from being discoverable:

    • The window closed. Most accessories stay discoverable for only a few minutes, then stop to save battery. If you took too long, start pairing mode again.
    • It connected to something else. If your phone is nearby with Bluetooth on, the headphones may reconnect to it instead of staying in pairing mode. Turn Bluetooth off on that phone first.

Fixing the “Make sure your Bluetooth device is still discoverable” Error on Windows

This error usually appears after your device already showed up in the Windows list and you clicked it. So Windows did find it. The problem happened during pairing, when the two devices tried to finish connecting.

    The most common reasons:

    • The accessory left pairing mode between the scan and your click.
    • The accessory still remembers an old connection to your PC, and it’s rejecting the new one.
    • You were asked for a PIN or passkey and didn’t confirm it in time.
    • The Windows Bluetooth service got stuck.

    Try these fixes in order:

    1. Put the accessory back into pairing mode and click fast. Start pairing mode, open Settings on your PC, then Bluetooth & devices, then Add device, then Bluetooth. Click the device as soon as it appears. If a PIN or passkey shows up, confirm it right away.
    2. Remove the old device from Windows. If the device was paired before, go to Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Devices. Find it, click the three dots, and choose Remove device. Then pair again from scratch. Old pairing data is one of the most common causes of this error.
    3. Clear the pairing memory on the accessory too. Removing the device from Windows only clears one side. Many headphones and speakers have a reset that clears their saved pairings, often by holding the power or pairing button for about 10 seconds. The exact steps depend on the brand.
    4. Restart the Bluetooth Support Service. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find Bluetooth Support Service (bthserv), right-click it, and choose Restart. If its Startup type says Disabled, double-click it and change it to Manual or Automatic.
    5. Update the Bluetooth driver. If the error happens with every device, open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click your adapter, and choose Update driver.

If the error still won’t go away, the pairing handshake itself is failing.

    Making Your Windows PC Discoverable

If another device needs to find your PC, for example to send a file, go to Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Devices, and open More Bluetooth settings. Check Allow Bluetooth devices to find this PC, then click OK.

How to Change Bluetooth Visibility Timeout on Android

On older Android phones, you could pick how long your phone stayed visible to other devices, like 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 1 hour, or never time out. That setting is called the visibility timeout.

Most current Android phones don’t have this setting anymore. Instead, your phone is discoverable only while the Bluetooth settings screen is open. On many phones you’ll see a line like “Visible as [your phone name] to other devices while Bluetooth settings is open.”

To make your Android phone discoverable:

    1. Open Settings, then Connected devices, then tap Pair new device. On Samsung, go to Connections, then Bluetooth.
    2. Turn Bluetooth on and stay on that screen.

Leave the screen or let your phone lock, and it stops being visible. That’s a common reason a car stereo “can’t find” an Android phone. The limit keeps your phone hidden from nearby devices when you’re not pairing.

On an older phone that still has a visibility timeout option, look in the Bluetooth settings or its three-dot menu. Set it longer only while you pair.

How to Make Your iPhone or Mac Discoverable

Apple works the same way as current Android phones. There’s no discoverable switch. Your device is visible only while the Bluetooth settings screen is open.

    • iPhone or iPad: Go to Settings, then Bluetooth, turn it on, and stay on that screen while the other device searches.
    • Mac: Open System Settings, then Bluetooth, turn it on, and keep that window open while the other device searches.

Leave that screen, and your iPhone or Mac disappears from the other device’s list, even with Bluetooth still on.

When to Clear Your Bluetooth Cache

If nothing above worked, corrupted Bluetooth data may be the cause.

    • Android: Go to Settings, then Apps, show system apps, find Bluetooth, tap Storage, and tap Clear cache. Don’t clear data, because that also deletes your saved devices.
    • iPhone and Mac: There’s no Bluetooth cache to clear. Restart the device instead.
    • Windows: Removing the device and restarting the Bluetooth Support Service, as shown above, does the same job.

If clearing the cache doesn’t help, a full Bluetooth settings reset is the last step.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the visibility timeout preventing my connection?

It can be. Accessories stop being discoverable after a few minutes, and phones stop as soon as you leave the Bluetooth screen. Start pairing mode again, or reopen the Bluetooth screen, and search right away.

Do I need to unpair from an old device to become discoverable again?

Often, yes. Many accessories reconnect to a device they already know instead of entering pairing mode. Turn off Bluetooth on the old device, or remove the accessory from it, then start pairing mode again.

Why does Windows say “make sure your device is still discoverable” when it already found it?

Because the problem happened during pairing, not during the search. Usually the accessory left pairing mode, or it’s still holding an old pairing with your PC. Remove the device, reset the accessory’s pairings, and try again quickly.

Why is my phone not finding Bluetooth devices?

Usually the other device isn’t in pairing mode, or its discoverable window closed. Start pairing mode again and scan right away. If your phone can’t find any device at all, the problem is on your phone’s side.
